This terrain in the valley of the Magra also made Pontremoli a target for numerous conquests from rival Italian and foreign lords. Pontremoli was controlled by various aristocratic families, including the <a title=\"Malaspina family\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malaspina_family\">Malaspina<\/a> (in 1319) and the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Antelminelli\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antelminelli\">Antelminelli<\/a> (in 1322). The conflict between the rival <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Guelfi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guelfi\">Guelfi<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ghibellini\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghibellini\">Ghibellini<\/a> factions in the early fourteenth century resulted in the construction of the Great Bell Tower (<i>Il Campanone<\/i>) to separate the rival camps. During these Medieval times Pontremoli was often visited by pilgrims travelling from <a title=\"Canterbury\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canterbury\">Canterbury<\/a> (England) to Rome.<\/p>\n<p>In 1331 Pontremoli was sold by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"John I of Bohemia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_I_of_Bohemia\">John I of Bohemia<\/a> to <a title=\"Mastino II della Scala\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mastino_II_della_Scala\">Mastino II della Scala<\/a> (Lord of <a title=\"Verona\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Verona\">Verona<\/a>). Pontremoli was later taken over by the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"House of Visconti\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_Visconti\">Visconti of Milan<\/a> in 1339. In 1404 the ownership of Pontremoli once again changed hands as it was seized by the Fieschi family of <a title=\"Genoa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genoa\">Genoa<\/a>. However, by 1433 Pontremoli was again under the control of the Milanese. In 1495 Pontremoli was sacked by the troops of <a title=\"Charles VIII of France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_VIII_of_France\">Charles VIII of France<\/a>. During this time Pontremoli was a territory owned by the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Sforza\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sforza\">House of Sforza<\/a>, who were the new <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Duke of Milan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duke_of_Milan\">Dukes of Milan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pontremoli was a French territory from 1508 until 1522 as several northern Italian areas were conquered. In 1526, Pontremoli was captured by <a title=\"Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_V,_Holy_Roman_Emperor\">Charles V<\/a> of the <a title=\"Holy Roman Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holy_Roman_Empire\">Holy Roman Empire<\/a>. Pontremoli was controlled by Spain until 1647, when it was bought by the <a title=\"Republic of Genoa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic_of_Genoa\">Republic of Genoa<\/a>. Three years later, Pontremoli was made part of the (Medici) <a title=\"Grand Duchy of Tuscany\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Duchy_of_Tuscany\">Grand Duchy of Tuscany<\/a>. It stayed as such (with the exception of a period of <a title=\"Apennins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apennins\">French control<\/a> from 1805 to 1814) until <a title=\"Italian unification\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_unification\">Italian unification<\/a> in the nineteenth century.<\/p>\n<p>With the Leopoldine reforms, Pontremoli became an autonomous community (whilst still part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany) in 1777.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pontremoli#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> In 1778, it officially became a City.<\/p>\n<p>The area was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1834.
