Colle di Buggiano

Villages and Hamlets

The name itself recalls its geographical position, in fact the small inhabited center rises exactly on a hill between the towns of Buggiano, Massa and Cozzile. Its origins date back to around the year 500 but the real original town was born about 100 years earlier, one kilometer away from the present one. The decision to change the position of the town was certainly made for defense reasons, in fact the old site was more subject to enemy raids as it was located further downstream right near the Cessana river. Colle during the Middle Ages acquired a lot of importance as a rest stop for travelers because, like the neighboring villages, it was located on the only road that could be traveled between present-day Lucca and Pistoia. So much so that the order of the Knights of Malta founded a church that still remembers their memory today with a huge red cross in front of the entrance. Today the Colle, with the surrounding houses, has about 300 inhabitants.
