The Red House Ximenes was built by the Jesuit engineer Leonardo Ximenes in 1765-68 as part of the reclamation of the swamp of Castiglione della Pescaia, to carry out reclamation functions by filling, to be implemented through the hydraulic regulation of winter flood waves, also guaranteeing the control and water support in lean periods, aimed at guaranteeing fishing activities. They are still present and characterize the internal and external environments, technological structures such as; locks, bulkheads and various gears, still working, although not used.
The Red House is now home to the Interactive Museum created by Mizar, an agency for scientific dissemination, designed by the well-known physicist Paco Lanciano.
The particular educational path is spread over two floors of the House Museum: an original documentary on the Diaccia Botrona, integrated with a three-dimensional effect projection on the map of this area, shows how the current environment is the result of natural evolution and interventions humans throughout history. In the second part of the itinerary the visitor can do birdwathcing activities on the panoramic terrace.
