Marciana Alta visit

The first documentary attestations of the “Comune Marciane” date back to the thirteenth century. The first nucleus of the fortress dates back to the same period. Subsequently, Marciana was chosen as a seasonal residence by the Appiano Princes, who built a mint here. Further evidence near Marciana are the Porta di Donna Paola and the Chiesetta di Sant’Agapito, so named in memory of Agapito Colonna. Near Marciana lived in hermitage and died (575) San Cerbone, bishop of Populonia. In the municipal area of Marciana the first plane crash (1960) of the Itavia company took place. On the coast of the hamlet of Procchio there is one of the most important naval shipwrecks from the Roman age in Italy. Testimony of the ancient pastoral activities are the Caprili di Capepe, the Caprili di Campo al Castagno, the Caprile della Stretta, the Caprili di Serraventosa, the Caprili della Tavola, the Caprili della Tavola and the Caprile di Natalino.

In Marciana there is a Visitor Center of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park (under the Pisan fortress) and the interesting Archaeological Museum. The PIsana Fortress can also be visited (only on opening and guided tour)
