Rocca Sillana and Pavone valley

We immediately start uphill to the Rocca Sillana, a building dating back to the year 945, where an informative museum has been set up. Then we descend into the riverbed of the Pavone torrent, to discover the ruins of the old copper mines. This first ford of the day will allow us to enter the territory of Castelnuovo val di Cecina and go up to the town of Montecastelli Pisano. Here we can admire the parish church of San Jacopo and Filippo (XII century) and the mighty fortress-tower of the Pannocchieschi family (XIII century building) which dominates the town’s profile. In addition, a small museum tells us about rural life with a collection of agricultural and domestic tools from the late 1800s and 1900s. Now we leave the town, and, still going downhill, we go to cross the Pavone stream for the second time in a truly wild environment. The ring closes after a slight uphill stretch to reach San Dalmazio.

Presenting two fords on the Pavone stream, the route is not recommended in periods following heavy rains.
